Higher-Level QTC (7.2) - analyze and creating

In the text, on page 231, it states that authentic activities can be developed for virtually any area of the curriculum. Using what you have learned, develop at least 3 authentic activities you could incorporate into your own classroom.

Explain the difference between problem-based learning and service learning. Why are authentic activities benefical?

Problem-based learning involves having students acquire knowledge/skills as they work on complex problems or projects that resemble what they will find in the real world. Service learning involves having students take on projects that directly or indirectly improve the quality of life in the community. These authentic activities are beneficial because they help students see why these knowledge/skills are necessary, promote their problem thinking/critical thinking skills, and help them know when to use their classroom knowledge/skills.

This question remembering and understanding from Bloom’s taxonomy. It is a lower-level question.

    Secondary Mathematics:
    1) Have the students figure out which take out restaurant provides the least marginal cost (most “bang out of the buck”) by calculating the costs of the ingredients/the labor and comparing that to the total costs.
    2) Have the students design their own healthy diet plans so that their caloric/trans-fat/sodium/cholesterol/fat intake falls near ____(a healthy range for their ages).
    3) Have the students balance their monthly budget in an imaginary scenario (ex: college student who makes XX amount of money and receives XX amount of financial support from family).

This question requires remembering/understanding what authentic activities are and then
creating authentic activities. This is a higher-level question.

Explain the difference between problem-based learning and service learning. Why are authentic activities beneficial?

Problem-based learning is a classroom activity in which students acquire new knowledge and skills while working on a complex problem similar to one that might exist in the outside world.

Service learning is an activity that promotes learning and development through contributing to the betterment of others and the outside community.

Authentic activities are beneficial because they are highly motivating and provide real world opportunities for students to experience and learn.

To give a general idea as to how I may incorporate three authentic activities into my classroom, I would use the activities in teaching social studies about different countries and cultures. First, I would have my students use maps/ globes to locate the particular country in which we are studying. Second, I would have the students make a certain food that is representative of that culture. Finally, I would have students become pen-pals with other students their age from the country we are studying and write letters to one another.

    Jenny,
I would agree with Bloom’s categories regarding your questions. I wonder if your second question may also be application since you have to apply the knowledge to create authentic activities for your classroom.
It’s funny; I created a similar question regarding authentic activities, as well. I really think they are important to incorporate in our future classroom!
