QTC 8.1 Lower-Level Thinking (Knowledge - Define, Identify, List,)
List and briefly describe a couple of factors that affect strategy use.
QTC 8.2 Higher-Level Thinking (Analysis - Compare, Differentiate, Examine)
Transfer is the extent to which knowledge and skills acquired in one situation affect people's learning or performance in a subsequent situation. Compare the different types of transfer and describe an example of each.
1. Effectiveness of strategies in the past: If a student has used a learning strategy in the past and received positive results from it, they are ikely to use that strategy again in the future, whereas a student who has not seen good results from a particular learning strategy will most likely not use that learning strategy again.
ReplyDeleteLearning motives and goals: The strategy used depends on the student's goal and motives. If a students only motive in learning the information is so that they can reproduce it on an exam, they will most likely use some sort of memorization strategy, and perhaps cram, just to memorize the material long enough to take the test. If a student's goal is to deeply understand the material for a long period of time, he or she will focus on strategies that promote understanding as well as memorization.
- I agree that this question requires lower level thinking and utilizes defining, identifying, and listing)
2. Positive and negative transfer refers to previous material either helping or hurting your ability to learn something new. Specific transfer refers to information from a new learning task overlapping with a previous task and general transfer is when a strategy you can use for one content area is also useful in another content area.
Examples: Positive- knowing Spanish helps you to learn French
Negative- Knowing that numbers with more digits are larger inhibits your understanding of decimal number values
Specific- Understanding math formulas can help you understand chemistry or physics
General- Taking organized notes can be useful in multiple subjects
- I think that this question could also be considered "create" since you are asking that we provide examples of each one.
