Chapter 7

Lower Level Question: Comprehension (See page 234 for answering these questions)

This chapter talks about the benefits of creating a "community of learners." What is a community of learners, and how might we recognize a classroom that has the characteristics of a "community of learners?"

Higher Level Question: Synthesize (or create)

Now that you are familiar with the idea of a community of learners, and have read about several different ways that communities of learners are structured, how would you structure a community of learners in your classroom? Write a paragraph about what your own "community of learners" would look like. Predict possible obstacles to creating this community of learners.

  1. 7.1:
A community of learners is a class in which teachers and students collaborate to build a body of knowledge about a topic and help one another learn about it.
Some characteristics of a "community of learners" draw on many resources like textbooks, magazines, the Internet, and one another; teacher provides guidance and direction for classroom activities; mechanisms are in place through which students can share what they've learned with others.

    7.2:
I would structure my community of learners through as much group discussion and learning as possible. Scaffolding before every lesson should be incorporated, but otherwise I want students to work together and bounce ideas off of one another. Diversity within the classroom should be used to the full extent. Students from other countries and cultures can allow a variety of different ideas into the classroom.

  2. Erin, I think it's interesting that we chose similar questions for the lower level thinking question. We both seem to value the importance of this aspect in this chapter. Creating the type of learning environment that we both discussed earlier will be important to all of us as teachers, no matter what age, subject or levels we would like to teach. I think that creating this type of classroom goes far beyond these ideals. Creating a safe and comfortable area to learn is beyond working together. Students need to feel safe.
