Lower-Level QTC (6.1)
*People store information in one of two ways. It either goes into their short-term memory or their long-term memory. Explain the difference between the two, and tell me why both are important?
High-Level QTC (6.2)
*Since achievement tests are typically given in the spring, students are required to remember information for longer periods of time. Come up with two things you could do to improve your students 'long-term memory skills.
6.1: Short-term memory is the component of memory where we hold attended-to information for a short time while we try to make sense of it. Much active cognitive processing occurs in the short term memory. On the other hand, long term memory is where the general knowledge and beliefs about the world and things learned in school are stored in a learners memory. The long term memory includes declarative knowledge, procedural knowledge, conditional knowledge, explicit and implicit knowledge. Both short term and long term are important components of the learning process. Short term allows learners to take in information and process it while the long term memory allows learners to recall and utilize information.
ReplyDelete6.2: One thing I would do to improve students long term memory would be by utilizing and teaching how to formulate retrieval cues (a stimulus that provides guidance about where to look for a piece of information in long term memory). Another thing I would do to improve my students long term memory would be by teaching skills for automaticity. I would do this by continuously reviewing and practicing skill sets so students would gain the ability to respond quickly and efficiently while mentally processing or physically performing a task.
Madelyne, I think both of your questions are labeled correctly and I thought they were really good questions--they really made me think and dig into the text. I think it is very important for teachers to think about ways to improve memory for students--although different memory devices may be needed for different classes and students, so this will definitely present a challenge. I think one way to overcome this obstacle is to teach memory skills just as you would teach test taking skills. What is one memory tool or strategy you would use in your classroom to help students with their long term memory?
(6.1) Short Term memory is where we hold attended to information for a short time while trying to process it. This is the component that does most of the mental work. Information here does not last long. It may only last for seconds unless the information is repeated. Long Term memory is a component of memory that holds skills for relativity a long time. Information is gradually transferred from short-term memory into long-term memory. The more the information is repeated or used, the more likely it is to end up in long-term memory. Unlike short-term memory, which is limited just very small amount of time, long-term memory can store unlimited information for long periods of time. The importance of short term memory processes is that that is where the cognitive work happens. This leads to the brains ability to store it in the long term.
ReplyDelete(6.2) To help prepare for achievement test and improve long term memory would be with procedural knowledge. Procedural knowledge is knowledge acquired slowly over time with lots of practice. Giving students many opportunity to practice already learned skills throughout the year. Another way to improve long term learning may be to provide meaningful learning opportunities. Relating already learned material (colors/counting) to new materials (patterns) will provide a more meaning and will be more easily accepted to long term memory.
These are great questions! They really made me take a more in-depth look at the text. I really had to think about examples, and decide if they were appropriate.
